It is such a good feeling to see places that have

It is such a good feeling to see places that have remained closed for such a long time reopen again for us all to enjoy and photograph. The epic Weeping Rock at the base of Leura Cascades is probably one of the prettiest falls in the Blue Mountains, and has been invariably closed due to hazardous landslides or flooding rains since July 2019. The environment has changed, trees once capping the top have fallen, been washed away, revealing a view right back into the Bridal Veil behind it, and with recent persistent rainfall in the Blueys, the creek systems are filled to brimming making them once again a delight to go and see.

There's been some items on my photography bucket l

There's been some items on my photography bucket list for so long, the hunt for the right conditions each year seems never ending, and today, as I headed into the Jamison Valley to seek out bucket list Astro shot number 794, nature presented me with another.... The Ghost fungi (Omphalotus Nidiformis). Conditions are rife for Fungi in the mountains at the moment with over a month's persistent rainfall, and now the high temperatures and humidity.

One of those shots where you;d already given up on any decent light for sunrise, despite the epic cloud and inversion snaking its way through the valley, and as you put the key in the ignition to head off for the much needed morning coffee, you suddenly find yourself sprinting back, camera in hand, snapping off a few quick shots of the insane rays of sunshine that miraculously appeared.⁠
As restrictions ease, things are beginning to get busy again. This could be us getting back to normal. Even @scenicworld_aus is reopening in a couple of weeks time 😊 No better time to come and visit the mountains.⁠

Watching the mists gently meander through the tree

Watching the mists gently meander through the trees at the base of the Grose Valley has always been something I've enjoyed, but seeing the devastation of the fires up close, even from a distance through the @sonyalpha.anz 100-400mm is quite startling. This vast slope of gums just under Lockleys pylon has shown little recovery since January despite the surrounding areas being awash with new growth. Will it ever grow back?⁠ or will this area become a haven for invasive or non-native species, forever changing the ecology of this once pristine wilderness area.⁠

Its peak astro season! That time of year where you sleep all day so you can stay out all night to capture the Milky Way as it transits from east to west, and plenty of opportunity to capture some early morning cloud inversion across the valleys of the Blue Mountains.⁠

Today is World Environment Day, and I couldn't thi

Today is World Environment Day, and I couldn't think of a more appropriate shot to post. Atop the escarpment of the Grose Valley, where the effect of the summers bushfires are still etched into the landscape, new epicormic growth bursts through, the red and green foliage of the once blackened gum trees glinting in the light of sunrise.⁠ Although the fires have scorched much that will never regrow in the same way, it has been incredible to watch the daily progress of some areas as it recovers from the devastation.⁠

Have an awesome holiday weekend everyone, and remember if you are visiting a National Park, please respect the areas still closed after the bushfires.⁠

Even with no rain, the falls in the Blue Mountains are still flowing nicely, many fed from hanging swamps, like a sandstone bathtub, filling with water from runoff, rainfall and aquifers, gradually trickling over the edge keeping the falls going so they will never run dry.⁠
